Digital technology has revolutionised the way we produce and share information. From crowdsourcing to data-driven journalism, over the years the internet has emerged as a vibrant medium for the dissemination of ideas. But in a global economy fueled by data, control over access, distribution and visibility is becoming increasingly synonymous with power. What type of information is produced, how it is regulated, circulated, and by whom, are now central concerns for netizens and governments alike.

With topics such as net neutrality and ‘fake news’ breaking the news every day, this year’s theme Information Control  invites researchers from various disciplines to revisit the power of information in the age of Big Data.

Connected Life 2018 will provide a forum for researchers to explore recurring and emerging topics in social informatics, and shed critical light on the ecosystem of actors— individuals, institutions and technologies — that seek to exercise or subvert control over information. Other social science research relating to the Internet is most welcome as well.
