Librarians have long been concerned with encouraging the careful and critical evaluation of information sources. Information Literacy, which is the ability to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information”, has emerged in recent years as a critical lifelong learning skill. Today Information Literacy is of enormous importance owing to the acceleration and proliferation of the Internet- that most dynamic and at times uncontrollable of forces. Online information offers both immense opportunities as well as considerable challenges. Messages that reinforce our beliefs are way more powerful and seductive than messages that are true, and they come to us so easily now through the web. As Librarians and educators, we all have a responsibility to counteract the surge of “Fake News”, to fight falsehoods with facts, to decipher the fake from the real, to question ourselves in the fight for truth.
